Named in commemoration of a renowned curving road situated in the Italian Alps, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is ideal for navigating mountainous roads. This model is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine which produces 280 horsepower and operates alongside an eight-speed automatic transmission as well as all-wheel drive. Additionally, the Quadrifoglio edition boasts a turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6 engine that generates a total of 505 horsepower while featuring an adaptive suspension as standard. Alfa Romeo claims a zero-to-60 acceleration time of 3.9 seconds. Interiorly, the Stelvio offers an optional 900-watt Harman/Kardon audio system, but due to the attractiveness of the engine, this may not be necessary.

Testing out a UK-spec Stelvio appears to validate the assumptions that this is exactly what the company needs. Not only gorgeous, it is rewarding to drive, has an excellent cabin and possesses a powerful, economical diesel engine. Though competition is fierce in the premium SUV market and some rivals may beat the Stelvio in space and technology, it joins the Giulia to demonstrate that Alfa Romeo can provide a desirable alternative to more familiar brands.

When the Giulia saloon was launched it was met with passionate anticipation. However, the success of the Stelvio SUV is far more impactful for the Italian automotive brand. In the UK, it is predicted to represent sixty-percent of Alfa Romeo's sales in the upcoming year, with similar numbers seen elsewhere around the world. In order for it to be successful, this model must be satisfying from both a emotional and rational point of view, given how competitive the segment has become. Therefore, it must contain more than just aesthetic appeal. Consequently, a UK-spec car was thoroughly tested in Northern Ireland to verify that it can meet these expectations.

The Stelvio continues to exhibit strong design capabilities. From numerous angles, we find that the SUV is one of the most alluring models available, and it draws more attention than the offerings of German competitors. Our one concern is the rear three-quarter view which may give the impression that the rear is overly bulky.

The interior elements are all undeniably stylish, capturing a semblance of Maserati design,The Stelvio continues to be a memorable presence in the arena of design. Most aspects of its appearance are considered by some to be one of the most attractive SUVs available, significantly more eye catching than its German competitors. An opinion presented cautiously is that, at least in its three-quarter view, it may appear somewhat bulkier than desired.

The interior has a generally elegant appearance, with a flavor emanating from Maserati and the unique characteristics of Alfa, such as its many sculptures. A seating position of 190mm higher than that of the Giulia was implemented in order to provide those inside with an enhanced view. And, despite the dashboard not being angled greatly towards the driver, the driving position seems to be ideal and the seating provides pleasant support.

The layout of the dashboard is straightforward and almost all the switches work well. It is regrettable, however, that the incorporated systems are not as powerful as those present in other higher grade SUVs, also featuring a less impressive graphic quality.

The general quality of the Stelvio is suitable, with numerous metal finishes and touchable materials that, while respectable, are not particularly special nor wealthy in appearance. Although it does not appear to be as well made as an Audi Q5, the distinctive style probably appeals to those who are tired of the prevalence of German models.

Alfa acknowledges that practicality is of equal importance in this sector. Therefore, the interior is fitted with sufficiently sized door bins, two central cup holders and a storage space within the center console. Despite this, the room inside is not particularly generous; two adults of average height should fit well in the backseats, though may not find ample head and leg space, and the trunk has a capacity of 525 litres which is an average figure for this segment.
