1995 McLaren F1 GTR was built at the request of the racing team to compete in the BPR Global GT Series. McLaren F1 GTRwas built with a choice of a modified engine management system with increased power output. McLaren F1 GTR had extensive modifications including changes in body panels, suspension, aerodynamics and interior. McLaren F1 GTR was built in full by McLaren in 1995.
McLaren F1 GTR was developed with an increase in size but weight loss. 1995 McLaren F1 GTR was built leading to McLaren F1 GTR '96 driven by David Brabham and John Nielsen. Body weight was reduced by approximately100 kg of the 1995 edition of the McLaren F1 GTR and the machine was kept detuned to 600 HP to comply racing regulations.
Having succeeded with the McLaren F1 GTR '95, McLaren could now develop a McLaren F1 GTR for the 1997 season. Further weight decrease and sequential transaxle added. Destroked little engine 6.1L to 6.0L instead of before. Because the bodywork heavily modified, the McLaren F1 GTR '97 is often referred to as the "longtail" thanks to the extended rear bodywork to increase rear downforce. A total of ten McLaren F1 GTR '97s built. Weight is reduced to a total of 910 kg.
