Volkswagen just dropped their new ride, the VW Tiguan, at the 2015 IAA. And when I say "new," I mean totally new - like a whole revolution instead of just an evolution. This baby is the first SUV from the Volkswagen Group that's designed with the MQB platform, which is all about the future, you know what I'm saying?
But that's not all, folks. This is just the beginning of Volkswagen's SUV takeover. They're gonna be launching all kinds of cool new SUVs in different markets all over the world. They're gonna hook up the USA with some sweet new rides, and China's gonna be all about that SUV life too. And in Europe, they're gonna offer different versions with longer wheelbases, 'cause that's what the people want. And get this - they already got a "long" Tiguan in the works, set to hit the streets in spring 2017. So get ready to see a whole lot more VW SUVs on the road soon.
This Volkswagen SUV is looking super sporty with its revamped body proportions and charismatic design. Plus, they managed to cut over 50 kilograms off the weight compared to the old Euro-5 engine model. And the interior space and boot space are on point too - when you load up the back seat, you get 615 litres of storage, and when you fold the seats down, you've got a whopping 1,655 litres of cargo space. That's 145 litres more than before, talk about an upgrade!
The engines on the Tiguan are killing it with efficiency gains! They got eight different engines to choose from, ranging from 85 kW / 115 PS to 176 kW / 240 PS. And get this, they're even more powerful than the old Euro-5 engines but up to 24% more fuel-efficient. Plus, the 4MOTION Active Control system lets you customize the all-wheel drive for any situation.
But that's not all, this bad boy can handle some serious trailer loads - up to 2,500 kg! And the assistance systems make driving even easier and safer, with features like Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Lane Assist, and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. Plus, you can access online services like automatic accident notification, traffic and parking info, and vehicle status reports. And don't even get me started on App Connect - it lets you connect your phone or tablet right to the infotainment system. This Tiguan is the real deal, my friends.
Volkswagen has totally redefined the A-SUV game with their new Tiguan. It's not some mashup of different styles - it's its own legit SUV world. And let me tell you, this bad boy can handle both on and off-road like a champ. It's basically "The SUV" to end all SUVs. The second gen Tiguan is even more dope, with designers bringing a fresh and competitive design to the table. The lines are precise, the character is dominant, and it stands out from the rest of the competition. The exterior and interior are a perfect match, creating a masterpiece of a vehicle.
The Tiguan SUV boasts a range of advanced safety features that make it a standout choice in its class. These include the active bonnet, City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring, and Lane Assist lane departure warning system, which work together to help keep drivers and passengers safe on the road. Notably, the active bonnet is designed to mitigate the risk of head injuries in the event of an accident involving a pedestrian or cyclist, by raising up upon impact.
It's seriously cutting-edge and has all the latest safety features. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Front Assist ambient monitoring system with City Emergency Braking, and Pedestrian Monitoring all come standard. Plus, if the Front Assist detects a pedestrian on the road, it'll warn you and even brake the car if necessary. And that's not all! The Lane Assist system will also keep you safe by warning you and countersteering if you accidentally start to drift out of your lane. This is especially helpful on country roads where oncoming traffic can be dangerous. Overall, the Tiguan is really raising the bar for affordable cars when it comes to safety.
The designers have done an amazing job creating an SUV that's not only stylish, but also practical and competitive. The sleek lines and bold character of the Tiguan make it stand out from the rest of its competitors. You won't regret taking a closer look at this beauty!
It's bigger and better than the previous model! The dimensions and proportions have been elevated, making it more spacious and comfortable. The length has been increased by 60 mm, while the wheelbase has been lengthened by 77 mm. It's also wider by 30 mm, giving you more room to move around. Plus, the aerodynamics have been improved with innovative features like newly designed door mirrors that reduce air drag by 40%. All these enhancements have resulted in a 0.048 improvement in the vehicle's Cd figure to 0.31.
It's got a really cool wider look up front thanks to an actual increase in width and the horizontal alignment of the radiator grille and headlights. Plus, it's the first Volkswagen SUV to offer optional or standard LED projection headlights (in the "Highline" model) that give it a really distinctive appearance. Depending on the equipment line, there's even a chrome strip above the headlights. And have you checked out the bonnet? It's positioned higher than the previous model and has a V-shape with sharp lines that curve upward sublimely. The bumper even mirrors the V-shape with an A-shape. All the lines point outward, which really emphasizes the Tiguan's width and power. It's a real head-turner!
The waistline of the new Tiguan is higher than its predecessor, emphasizing its SUV design. The character line, one of the clearest design features of the Tiguan, is also drawn higher. This line demonstrates the creativity of the designers and the production specialists' expertise at Volkswagen. It extends across the entire silhouette of the Tiguan, with the door handles seamlessly positioned along its length. For the first time, the character line is executed twice on the car, creating a "line dialogue" between the upper and lower lines. The lower line further emphasizes the sculpturally flared wheel arches and the shoulder section, giving the car a powerful look.
In comparison to the previous model, the area above the character line is a flatter, more elegant band of side windows that extends into the dynamic angled D pillars, improving all-round visibility. This 'line dialogue' of fine, double lines - such as around the windows and beneath the roof line - adds exclusive brilliance to these areas, while also giving the car a sportier, lower look. The side mirrors, mounted just beneath the window shoulders and refined in wind tunnel testing, minimise lateral wind noises. The lowest section of the side body is an area in black that wraps around the vehicle, and the rugged plastic trim add-ons of the wheel arches are also finished in this colour. A chrome trim strip elegantly separates the surfaces painted in body colour and those in anthracite colour on the vehicle's sides, and continues at the rear.
The rear of the car is defined by a sharp and precise lateral character line that sits above the LED rear lights, which have a stunning three-dimensional design. The horizontal cut between the lights creates a trailing edge that not only looks great but is also important for the car's aerodynamics. Plus, the tailgate extends far to the sides, and the opening is wider than ever before! The rectangular surface between the horizontal cut and the load sill underscores the Tiguan's width and gives it an unmistakable look from the rear. And don't forget about the anthracite-colored trim and granite grey metallic diffuser. Lastly, the roof box is slightly drawn in, creating a powerful shoulder section like a sporty coupe. It's truly a sight to behold!
The Tiguan's interior has got a totally new look that screams sporty and SUV all at once! You'll love how everything is focused on the driver, from the instrument cluster (which can even be upgraded to the digital Active Info Display) to the infotainment system that's perfectly angled your way. Plus, the centre console with its climate controls is also angled towards you for maximum comfort. And don't forget about those sweet buttons arranged around the gear lever - they're perfectly placed for easy access. It's all about form and function here, and the designers nailed it! The new 4MOTION Active Control has a round, easy-to-use multifunction switch that's conveniently located on the driver's side. The button array is even lengthened diagonally to make it more accessible. The cockpit atmosphere is really remarkable, thanks to the interplay of the dash panel, centre console, and door panels. The designers paid close attention to details, like the narrow, precisely worked frames in aluminium around the air vents and door loudspeakers. The door handles add to the rugged SUV feeling. They also made sure to choose surface textures and distribute volumes in a way that emphasizes the SUV vibe. The ergonomics and intuitive operating structures are consistently thought-out, making the interior a pleasure to use. Plus, even though the vehicle body is low, there's still plenty of head room at the rear seats!
With excellent space utilisation, the interior length has increased by 26 mm, giving you more seating space than ever before. Even the rear seating area has 29 mm more knee room, so you and your passengers can stretch out comfortably. Plus, the luggage compartment is bigger too! With an extra 145 litres of cargo capacity, you'll have up to 615 litres with five people on-board. How cool is that? And if you need even more space, the rear bench seat is asymmetrically split and can be adjusted up to 18 cm longitudinally. You can even adjust the reclining angle of the seat backrest! When you fold the rear bench, you get a whopping 1,655 litres of boot volume. If you need to stow long cargo items, just fold the front passenger seat forward. Easy peasy! And the best part? The load sill has been lowered, making it even easier to load up your Tiguan. We hope you love these practical features as much as we do!
Volkswagen has gone all out with the latest technology to make it one of the most advanced A-SUVs in the world. They've really focused on enhancing the safety, convenience, infotainment and dynamism of the vehicle. You'll love the 12.3-inch Active Info display and head-up display, which are both brand new features for Volkswagen SUVs. They make it so easy to stay connected and access information while you're on the road. Plus, there are a ton of protective assistance systems and innovative convenience systems that will make your driving experience safer and more enjoyable. And don't even get us started on the infotainment systems - they're seriously top-notch! You'll be able to use all sorts of online services and even integrate your Android or Apple smartphone into the control of the infotainment systems. It's seriously impressive!
New features that come standard with the base version (Trendline) of our Volkswagen vehicles. You'll be happy to know that we've included the Front Assist surroundings monitoring system, which includes City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, as well as an active bonnet. Plus, we've added the Lane Assist lane departure warning system to help keep you safe on the road. Of course, we also prioritize your safety with a network of seven airbags, including a knee airbag on the driver's side. And, to prevent any hazardous secondary collisions, we've included the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. Finally, the Driver Alert System comes standard with the middle equipment level (Comfortline). We hope these features make your driving experience even better!
The Highline version of the Tiguan comes with some amazing features? One of them is the adaptive cruise control that uses radar to keep a safe distance from the traffic ahead. And if you have the DSG, it can even handle stop-and-go traffic (traffic jam assist)! The Tiguan also has some other great safety features like the Side Assist (lane-changing assistant), Pre-Crash proactive occupant protection (which can detect potential collisions and take preventive measures like tightening the seatbelts and closing windows), Emergency Assist (which can detect if the driver is unresponsive and bring the car to a stop), and Area View (which gives you a 360-degree view using four cameras).
The second generation Tiguan from Volkswagen will come with a brand new 3-zone automatic climate control system. This means that passengers in the back can adjust their own temperatures and blower speeds with a separate control panel. Plus, the new Climatronic system includes an air quality sensor and active biogenic filter, so you can breathe easy knowing that pollutants like mould spores and allergens won't be getting into your car. This technology is totally unique and only available from Volkswagen.
But that's not all - we've also redesigned the seats to make them even more comfortable, with optional memory function on the driver and front passenger seats. And speaking of comfort, the new ergoActive seat for the driver and front passenger includes electric 4-way lumbar support and even a massage function!
And let's not forget about the panoramic tilting sunroof - it's one of the largest in its class (870 mm x 1,364 mm) and has integrated ambient lighting to make your trips even more enjoyable. Plus, we've included features like Easy Open / Easy Close (which automatically opens or closes the tailgate in response to a specific foot movement behind the Tiguan), steering wheel heating, and electromechanical progressive steering (which means you'll have fewer steering wheel turns and more precise driving in the mid-range of steering).
The Tiguan model in the Trendline equipment version comes equipped with the standard Composition Touch radio system that features a 5.0-inch monochrome touchscreen. The Tiguan Comfortline and Highline versions, however, come with the Composition Colour radio system that features a 5.0-inch colour touchscreen, at no additional cost. Additionally, the Tiguan offers the Composition Media radio system that features an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen, among other option levels such as the Discover Media and Discover Pro radio-navigation systems, which also feature 8.0-inch displays. All of these infotainment options are part of the second generation modular infotainment matrix (MIB II).
The MIB II technology facilitates seamless connectivity between the Tiguan and contemporary Apple and Android smartphones via App Connect. This feature not only encompasses MirrorLink™ but also incorporates CarPlay™ (Apple) and Android Auto™ (Google) into the infotainment systems. In addition, Volkswagen has set a new benchmark by providing an interface for tablets through the Media Control app, thereby enhancing user experience. Furthermore, the Volkswagen online service Guide & Inform is once again available on-board, providing access to essential features such as real-time traffic updates, parking availability (number of spaces and address) in nearby car parks, and fuel prices and addresses of filling stations. Volkswagen has recently introduced its latest online service, Security & Service, which provides a range of benefits to its users. This service allows for seamless assistance from the vehicle via a specialized call centre for various situations. The service comes equipped with numerous features such as online road service call, automatic accident notification, service scheduling, and requesting the vehicle status report. Depending on the chosen package, users may also access additional features such as requesting vehicle status or parking location via their smartphone or activating the parking heater function.
It is worth noting that the smartphone can be conveniently placed in a newly designed and innovative interface box, known as the "Comfort" mobile phone preparation. This feature stands out as it allows for the phone to be charged and connected to the vehicle's outside antenna inductively, based on the QI standard, without the need for cables.
Volkswagen offers a diverse range of equipment configurations, which can be paired with any of the eight Euro-6 engines available. This class of vehicles comes standard with a turbocharger, direct injection, stop-start system, and battery regeneration. The TSI petrol engines, in particular, offer varying levels of power output, ranging from 92 kW / 125 PS to 162 kW / 220 PS. The new Tiguan boasts four diesel engines (TDI) that deliver impressive power outputs ranging from 85 kW / 115 PS to 176 kW / 240 PS. The base engines come with front-wheel drive, while all other versions offer all-wheel drive as an option or standard. Notably, the new Tiguan's four-cylinder engines are up to 24% more fuel-efficient than their Euro-5 predecessors. Furthermore, compared to the retired model with Euro-6 engines, the new Tiguan represents a significant improvement, with fuel savings of up to 10%.
The second generation Tiguan has established its dominance with an advanced drive system matrix. Volkswagen has upgraded the engines of the previous model to new Euro-6 engines this year. However, the latest model has witnessed a significant improvement in both petrol and diesel engines. The TSI engine's output was limited to 150 PS earlier, but the range has now extended to two 2.0-litre engines with 180 and 220 PS. The diesel engines have experienced a significant leap in performance. Formerly, the most robust TDI generated an output of 184 PS, but it has now been surpassed by the 190 PS engine variant. Additionally, the top-performing engine currently in use is the 240-PS engine (2.0 TDI), which has undergone recent engineering and now features biturbo charging and 2,500 bar of injection pressure. With a displacement of 88 kW / 120 PS per litre, the 2.0 TDI boasts one of the highest specific powers in the A-SUV segment.
A significant number of Tiguan drivers prioritize the ability to navigate off-road terrain safely, whether for business or personal purposes. Furthermore, the inclusion of an all-wheel drive system enhances safety in unfavorable weather conditions. Volkswagen acknowledges this need and provides the new Tiguan with the highly effective 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, available as an option or standard depending on the chosen engine. It is worth noting that all Tiguan 4MOTION models boast an elevated ground clearance of 11 mm (200 mm instead of 189 mm). Furthermore, the Tiguan offers the option to equip a specialized off-road front end, which increases its approach angle from 18.3 to 25.6 degrees. The rear departure angle and ramp angle remain consistent at 24.7 degrees for all versions. A new feature exclusive to the SUV is the 4MOTION Active Control system, which includes four distinct off-road modes. Notably, the Tiguan is capable of accommodating significant trailer loads of up to 2,500 kilograms, regardless of whether it has an on-road or off-road front end design.
The 4MOTION all-wheel drive system boasts a fifth generation Haldex coupling that proactively distributes torque to all four wheels, preventing slip before it occurs. During regular driving conditions, fuel is conserved by only powering the front wheels. However, when there is a likelihood of losing traction, the rear axle is instantaneously and variably engaged. The Haldex coupling functions as a longitudinal lock while the electronic stability control system's electronic differential locks (EDS) act as transverse locks for all four wheels, further enhancing the system's performance.
The 4MOTION Active Control is equipped with an intuitive rotary/pushbutton switch, conveniently located on the centre console. This switch enables the driver to select from four higher-level modes and various popup menus. By turning the switch to the left, the driver can activate either the Onroad or Snow road profiles. Turning the switch to the right allows the driver to choose from either the Offroad profile, which automatically sets off-road parameters, or the Offroad Individual profile, which allows for variable settings. While driving off-road, the 4MOTION Active Control feature enables drivers to swiftly and manually adjust the assistance systems to suit the prevailing propulsion situation. This results in a significant safety enhancement. Likewise, the "Snow" mode is also designed to optimize safety during winter weather conditions, particularly in areas such as skiing regions.
The forthcoming Tiguan model will be offered in three distinct equipment lines: Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline. Each of these versions will be capable of being fitted with an off-road front end as an optional feature, providing a 25.6 degree approach angle in lieu of the standard 18.3 degrees. The Comfortline and Highline variants will sport a sleek, athletic design with their default front end. Additionally, the recently developed R-Line packages will further enhance the SUV's already impressive dynamic capabilities.
The R-Line packages are designed with a focus on pure dynamics, offering customers either a complete package of exterior and interior features or an alternative exterior package. The exterior features of the R-Line package include 19-inch "Sebring" alloy wheels, with the option to upgrade to the 20-inch "Suzuka" alloy wheels, which are named after a renowned race track. It is worth noting that the maximum size of the previous model's wheels was limited to 19 inches. With the exception of the wheel arches, all other anthracite-coloured body surfaces are coated in body colour to complement the R-Line exterior package. This also extends to the exclusive door trims that present a similar appearance to side sill extensions. The exterior design is further enhanced by meticulous details such as bumpers in R-Line design with glossy black aerodynamic accents, a two-tone roof spoiler, and a rear diffuser that showcases a glossy black finish. The R-Line package is equipped with a range of interior features that are both comprehensive and sophisticated. These include R-Line design seats that are available in cloth and microfibre upholstery, as well as optional "Vienna" leather upholstery. The package also boasts aluminium door sill guards with the iconic R-Line logo, which can be optionally illuminated. Other notable features include decorative stitching in Crystal Grey, special trim accents, stainless steel pedal caps and foot rest (driver's side), black rooflining, and a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel that proudly displays the R-Line logo.
